It's no surprise that we have recently had an increased number of requests for service work on warehouse dock equipment lately. Without fail every winter at the peak of our Arctic chill and every summer at the peak of our extreme heat and humidity, We get the calls. So... We schedule the service calls and sometimes simply make the needed adjustments on the docks, but more often than not expensive parts and repairs are needed. So whether you have a single dock leveler or multiple, it means inconvenience and down time.
A simple and cost effective solution to this problem is to get on a preventative maintenance (PM) schedule. Either Bi-annually or quarterly. Extreme temperature changes affect just about everything, Including your docks. Mechanical and hydraulic dock levelers work differently in hot and cold.
Loosening Up the mechanical levelers in the winter and tightening in the summer are needed for them to work properly. Same goes for the hydraulic units. Flow Control must be adjusted to optimize operation. Besides obvious cost savings, increased longevity and safety, it's the down time and inconvenience that I hear clients complain about. Having a PM schedule allows you to pre determine the date that you will be inconvenienced and it can usually be worked around.
In the end a PM schedule will likely pay for itself over the year.
